THE TOWN

It will take approximately one hour to reach Cortona from the Villa.

Cortona is an Etruscan town that actually existed before Rome.  It has a wonderful museum exhibiting artefacts discovered in the area as well as an Etruscan mummy.  The Etruscan tombs situated just outside of Cortona are open to the public.

 

Cortona has been made famous by the book "Under the Tuscan Sun" by Francis Mayes.  It was then made into a film starring Diane Lane.  Cortona is full of high end shops and wonderful restaurants.  It also has some very interesting churches to visit.  Just outside of Cortona is the monastery "Le Celle" where Saint Francis spent some time before going to Assisi.  It's worth a visit.
